Could 2500 of the worlds leading climate scientists be wrong?

Last week 2500 climate scientists from 130 countries signalled a warning to the world. They are now 90% certain that the global warming of 0.7 degrees celsius that has occurred over the last 100 years is directly related to the activities of mankind.

They went on to add that if we continue at this pace, the globe will warm at an accelerated pace with temperatures of between 1.1 degrees and 6 degrees being quoted. This will do irreverable damage to our planet and the species that occupy it.

In their response to the IPCC report, both George W Bush and John Howard continue to drag their heels by looking for their own solutions instead of admitting that their non co-operation of the last decade has been the wrong direction and getting together with the rest of the world and ratifying the Kyoto Protocol.

I am not sure what needs to happen for this occur? Perhaps they need to see the hairs burning on their forearms first?

Peter Gray Victory agains Centennial Coal

Peter Grays victory last week in the Environmental court I believe is the tipping point in the case against greenhouse gas producing fossil fuels in Australia. It was an atypical "David and Goliath" scenario with 26 year old Mr Gray emerging the victor over its stunned giant of an opponent.

What does this mean? It means that coal companies have to start considering the impact that its coal will have on glabal warming whether its burned in NSW or in Japan.

Granted, this win was only in the NSW Land and Environment court however, this has delayed things by a couple of months and appeals could go on for a while.

MaCA walks against Warming

Thousands of people turned up today on a drizzly and grey Sydney November day today, more evidence of the climate chaos that we are faced with. Crowds showed their support for the climate action movement and displayed their distaste for the way politicians are gambling with their childrens future.

Maroubra Climate Action flew their banner high and the day was a huge success for the movement.

The Great Opportunity: 25% Renewable Energy for NSW

State and national environment groups have today launched a campaign for NSW to join other states and nations in developing a strong renewable energy industry to combat climate change.

The groups released a report today which outlines that a 25% renewable energy target for NSW would conservatively deliver:
  • 4,000 new permanent jobs
  • $9 billion new investment in NSW
  • 4000 MW new electricity generation capacity equivalent to 2 coal-fired power stations
  • A 13 % reduction in electricity sector greenhouse emissions on current levels by 2020
  • Enough renewable electricity to power every household in NSW

A 25 per cent renewable energy target for NSW would see thousands of jobs created, billions of dollars worth of investment and a reduction in NSW’s greenhouse pollution. All we need is the political will to make it happen.

Emissions from electricity are rising rapidly in NSW, and renewable energy is key to the solution. $3 billion dollars worth of renewable energy projects are in the pipeline in NSW, but none may get built without Government action.

What a great idea....

Hottest Consecutive Days in October - EVER!!!

What climate change? Global warming....ya right!

Its those damn greenies again, cant take the heat.

When are the leaders gonna wake up. John Howard is still saying that despite the surge in the mercury, he aint gonna budge on Kyoto.

Its almost similar to a game of chicken...just hope JH gets out the way in time!

Peter Gray v Centennial Coal

Environmentalist, Peter Gray today launched court challenge against Centenial Coal and their aspirations of ripping up the Hunter Valley and turning it into a lovely open cut coal mine that will ultimately result in more greenhouse gas emissions than all the motor vehicles of NSW in any particular year.

In their environmental assessment this was not even mentioned as a consideration. It is this fact that Peter Gray is contesting.

Morris Iemma says that this climate change thing that he has heard people talking about seems like a tragedy waiting to happen. Yet , Centennial Coal are so cool that they can go ahead and contribute to an an environmental disaster of truely tragic proportions.

Well done Peter.

Its Easy Being Green

While we are on the theme of making a bit of a difference in our own little way, this organisation
are making it really easy (and affordable) for people to recieve their own energy saving packs via the internet.

Logon to http://www.easybeinggreen.net/ and register to receive your pack of energy saving lightbulbs as well as your AAA water saving shower head and all this for a mere (wait for it) one dollar.

Yes......$1.00

By using these devices as an alternative to the normal halogen burners and shower heads you can:

* slash $150 off your household energy bill
* save the release of up to 2 tonnes of greenhouse gases
* save an average of 21,000 litres of fresh water

So go on....dont say you can't make a difference!

Project 2996 - Remembering Kiran Reddy Gopu on Sept 11

Project 2996 pays tribute to every one of the 2996 victims of the tragedy that occured on Sept 11 2001. Each victim has been allocated to an individual blog to pay their respects on and arround the tragic day.

Kiran Reddy Gopu was a graduate in computer sciences doing his masters degree at University of Bridgeport.

He was in World Trade Center, Tower 1 on the 97th floor when psycopathic fundamentalists flew the highjacked aircraft into it.

Friends say that he was relentless in pursuit of his goals and never gave up always encouraging his friends to do the same. It was his dream to work at the World Trade Centre. This dream came true when he was employed by Marsh & McLennan as a software engineer.

He was 24 when his life was taken.

A Tribute to Steve Irwin

Steve Irwin was the genuine article. He was living his dharma. He used the word 'love' a lot and he meant it. In a world full of phonies, he was real. He wasn't putting it on. He was being himself. In Life Being real is the best thing you can be. Don't be afraid to be real. There's a Steve Irwin in all of us.

Dr David Suzuki - An Inspiration!

Last nights "Save Anvil Hill" fundraiser at the Enmore Theatre was awe inspiring. I left there feeling that saving the planet was a monumental challenge, but definitely a possibility.

An overriding theme that echoed through the theatre was that every little bit of effort by every individual could ultimately have a potentially planet saving impact. The other is that it is quite evident that we cannot rely on our appointed leaders to do what they are meant to be doing...looking after us and our children.

David Suzuki has devised a 10 point challenge urges as many people as possible to focus living by at least 3 of them. By doing this, we could change our seemingly grim destinies.

So far 221,886 individuals have taken the challenge, I urge you to do the same.
